WELCOME TO AMSTERDAMNED 2017!

From Wednesday the 25th until Friday the 27th of October, Film Events and Filmtheater Kriterion will jointly host the second edition of the three-day genre film festival “Amsterdamned”.

Ten new and classic films in the horror, fantasy and science fiction genres will be screened, most of them not getting a general release in The Netherlands. The opening film of Amsterdamned 2017 is Dick Maas’ Netherhorror/SF-classic DE LIFT, shown in a fully restored version that was supervised by Maas himself. Various cast and crew members will be present at the screening, including Maas and lead actress Willeke van Ammelrooy.

Last year, with the blessing of Dick Maas himself and the enthusiastic support of the Kriterion staff, Jan Doense took the plunge and started a new festival: Amsterdamned. In the Kriterion cafe, suitably decorated for the occasion, visitors can get together before, between and after the screenings to discuss the state of genre films, perhaps while enjoying one of the many specialty beers Kriterion has on tap. Various stands will offer books, magazines, DVD’s and other genre related merchandise during the festival.

Last year Amsterdamned honoured Nicolas Roeg, and this year we celebrate another British filmmaker who had a huge influence on genre film: John Boorman. Survival thriller DELIVERANCE, science fiction spectacle ZARDOZ and fantasy film EXCALIBUR will all be screened.

All films are English spoken or English subtitled unless indicated otherwise.

FILMS

THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE

(Andre Øvredal, UK/US 2016)

DELIVERANCE

(John Boorman, US 1972)

The churning river is not the only danger in John Boorman’s relentless survival thriller and the mother of all backwoods horror films. Squeal like a pig!

THE EVIL WITHIN

(Andrew Getty, US 2017)

This descent into the deepest madness of a troubled filmmaker, a member of the Getty family of millionaires, was fifteen years in the making.

EXCALIBUR

(John Boorman, US/UK 1981)

More than thirty years before Game of Thrones came out, John Boorman made this serious, adult fantasy film that sets the legend of King Arthur in a kind of Middle Earth.

GAME OF DEATH

(Sebastien Landry, Laurence Baz Morais, FR/CA/US 2017)

The Ouija board is child’s play compared to GAME OF DEATH: an innocent looking board game that demands 25 deaths. Who must die? Who cares? Hilarious splatter horror.

IT STAINS THE SANDS RED

(Colin Minihan, US 2017)

Can you escape a hungry zombie in the desert? Molly discovers it’s not as easy as it seems. Winner of the Midnight X-Treme programme at the Sitges film festival.

DE LIFT

(Dick Maas, NL 1983)

What if a seemingly ordinary elevator develops its own, dark will? With this brilliant idea and an excellent execution, Dick Maas’ debut film became the must-see horror film of 1983.

PSICONAUTAS, LOS NIÑOS OLVIDADOS

Birdboy: The Forgotten Children
(Alberto Vazquez, Pedro Rivero, Spain 2015)

Subversive animation film about two teenagers, Birdboy and Dinki, who are trying to escape their depressing environment. Violent, funny, crude, nasty and poignant.

THE VOID

(Jeremy Gillespie, Steven Kostanski, CA 2016)

Eighties-style horror is back! A hospital is plagued by creepy figures looking for a portal into a Lovecraftian dimension. Mr. Horror’s midnight movie tip!

ZARDOZ

(John Boorman, Ireland/US 1974)

In the 23rd century, barbarian Zed (Sean Connery) discovers that the world functions differently than he thought. This science fiction satire by John Boorman is one of the most remarkable cult films of the seventies.
